Echocardiography (Cardiovascular Sonography)
Echocardiography, also known as cardiovascular sonography, is an ultrasound test that provides a detailed outline of the heart and its valves and chambers. A specialist known as a cardiovascular sonographer will use a handheld wand, placing it over the chest to help create 2D or 3D images. The test is used to help detect various heart diseases, including congenital heart disease, aortic aneurysms, valve disease, and cardiomyopathy.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
One of the most well-known scan types, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is another noninvasive imaging technique. Computed Tomography (CT Scans)

The patient lies on a table that is then moved inside a tube. An X-ray source will then rotate around your body, combining each image to create an in-depth cross-section. CT scans can be used on bones, organs, soft tissues, and blood vessels to help doctors create treatment plans.
Mammography
Mammography also uses X-rays but is specifically designed to help healthcare professionals examine the breasts. A mammogram is performed by a mammography technologist and helps with the early detection of breast cancer and other breast diseases. This imaging test requires patients to place their breasts between two plates, allowing X-rays to pass through effectively.
Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine tests are performed by nuclear medicine technologists. These tests involve the use of radioactive materials, called radiotracers, which are given to the patient via injection, ingestion, or inhalation. These specialists then use a camera or scanner to produce images of the body’s organs and tissues. - Cardiovascular sonography: This program takes 24 months (26 months with an associate degree) to complete. It helps students learn how to perform echocardiograms, analyze the data, and carry out other important aspects of the job.
- Diagnostic medical sonography: This program helps you prepare for life as an ultrasound tech. It also takes 24 months (26 months with an associate degree) to complete.
- MRI technologist: This comprehensive program combines important science and math lectures with laboratory training and a clinical externship, giving students all they need to succeed in this exciting position. This program can be completed in 18 to 23 months.
- Nuclear medicine: This specialty program helps students gain the knowledge and training necessary to excel in this growing field. You’ll learn how to administer radiopharmaceuticals, operate imaging equipment, and follow safety protocols.
- Radiologic technologist: Our X-ray tech program gives students hands-on training with a variety of diagnostic imaging services, including X-rays, CT scans, and mammograms. The program takes 20 months (23 months with an associate degree) to complete.
- Computed tomography: This program helps students learn to perform CT scans properly. Since students will need to inject contrast as part of the program, they’ll need a venipuncture certification.
- Mammography technician: The mammography program is designed to provide an extensive study of this important medical field. This program is particularly enticing because it only takes 6 months to complete.
