Become an “MRI” Technologist
MRI Technologist
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has revolutionized medical imaging by taking images inside of the human body without any invasive procedures commonly known in x-ray or even CT scans. Because the technology is still relatively new compared to other invasive procedures, the technology continues to evolve at a very rapid rate. In turn, allowing for future technologists to progress and evolve as technology advances.
The MRI Technologist program is a comprehensive course of study. The structure of this course combines introduction to medical/patient care skills, physics, math, medical terminology, human anatomy, cross sectional anatomy, theory, laboratory, computer skills and a clinical externship consisting of about 1040 hours.
The student is taught MRI technology and learns to operate the MRI scanner to produce cross sectional images of the patient for diagnostic purposes. While technologists must be proficient in understanding the MRI system, compassion and strong patient care skills are emphasized as well as being a team member alongside the radiologist and physician, dedicated to providing excellence in patient treatment.
This curriculum is designed to provide qualified individuals an opportunity to acquire the knowledge, attitude and skills which will enable them to become safe and competent in MRI technology and prepare the graduate for an entry-level position as an MRI technologist.
Upon successful completion of the MRI Program, graduates are eligible to sit for the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) National Certification Examination. The graduate may also be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) upon completion of the MRI Associate in Applied Science Degree.
Class Structure and Delivery
All lectures are delivered in a blended format. Blended courses combine traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with (remote) live-streamed lectures to optimize the learning experience and offer additional time flexibility to those students with busy schedules or long commutes. It is also through in-class lab where students will gain more knowledge, skills and confidence to perform actual medical diagnostics in various settings to prepare them for real medical diagnostics during the clinical rotations.
Why a Career in MRI?
The MRI Technologist profession has seen significant growth in demand in the healthcare field in recent years. As the population continues to age, there will be increasing demand for diagnostic imaging. An MRI Technologist images a person’s organs and insides using a computer, a magnet and radio waves to produce multiple cross-sectional images to form a 3 dimensional image – a service that has become vital to physicians, imaging centers and clinics worldwide. An MRI uses no radiation and the images taken from an MRI machine enable a radiologist to check and diagnose medical problems in a non-invasive and safe procedure.
Some of the benefits of working in the the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) field include:
- Working with people
- Competitive salary
- High demand Job security
- Rewarding and fulfilling
Learn and train in modern and up-to-date MRI facilities.
In addition, our graduates are more competitive in the job market since our graduates are eligible to take both the ARMRIT and ARRT primary examinations.
Q&A of Becoming a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist (MRI)
Do I need a High School Diploma to register in the MRI Technologist program?
Yes. Having obtained basic General Education from an accredited and verifiable institution, shows you have a basic level of comprehension to absorb the information given in lectures and during lab practice. There are ways you can still achieve your High School or GED education while enrolled at NPC but it really depends on your academic history. Every case is different and it is highly recommended that you speak to an admissions representative to help create the right path towards your success.
Do I need an Associate Degree to become a MRI Technologist?
Our Associate in Applied Science degree is only required if you are seeking American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification in MRI. The American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist (ARMRIT) does not require a degree to obtain a certification. Having an Associate Degree may give you an upper-hand by becoming eligible for more than one certification (ARMRIT). In turn, having more than one certification (ARRT and ARMRIT) may offer more employment opportunities.
Is a license required to become a MRI Technologist?
This is a big no. Unlike many other professions in the medical field, the State of California does not issue licenses to MRI Technologist and does not require obtaining a certification in order to be employed. Be wary of any institution which informs you a “license” is required. On the other hand, not having a certification from registries like ARRT or ARMRIT reduces your chances of obtaining considerable employment opportunities. Obtaining any of these certifications is not as easy as simply attending school and it requires trained professionals who know the certification process to ensure you reach your ultimate goal.
How long is the program at NPC and why do different schools have MRI programs that vary in length?
Can I transfer credits from another college to take the MRI program at NPCollege?
Yes. You may transfer General Education credits from your current or previous accredited college. You may also challenge some of the introductory courses for additional credits. To do this, you can submit your prior school’s unofficial transcripts or proof of past related work experience for an evaluation.
Can NPCollege credits be transferred to another institution?
Program Completion Time
Diploma — 18 months / 76 weeks / 2060 hours
Associate Degree — 22 months / 88 weeks / 2330 hours
